All About 5-HTP
Substance that is created naturally in the body from the amino acid tryptophan, and that in turn is used by the body to produce serotonin, an important neurotransmitter.
Supplemental 5-HTP is derived from the seeds of the griffonia plant (Griffonia simplicifolia), which is native to western Africa. It can be used to aid in weight loss, insomnia, and depression.
In a sense, 5-HTP can be seen as a substitute for supplemental L-tryptophan, which is no longer available in the United States.
5-HTP should be used together with a high-carbohydrate food or liquid such as orange juice, and as part of a comprehensive nutritional program.
It may not benefit everyone who takes it. If you regularly take large doses of 5-HTP (more than 300 milligrams daily), you should undergo blood testing for eosinophil (a type of white blood cell) levels every three months.
You should avoid this supplement if you are taking antidepressants.
Cook’s is proud to offer our own brand of 5-HTP, made from only the finest ingredients.
